GOP Candidate For N.Y. Senate Steps Down After Announcing She Had An Affair

Gia Arnold, a Republican candidate for the New York state senate, has just announced that she will no longer be running in this year's election.

She announced this on her Facebook page, and cited an extramarital affair as the major contributing factor in her decision to step down from candidacy.

Arnold, 24, has three children, all of whom are between the ages of 2 and 5 and all of whom were produced from her current marriage, which she describes as "declining."

"I have made personal decisions that have ultimately resulted in the necessity of my stepping down from the campaign,” wrote Gia Arnold on her campaign's Facebook page.

While she understands that her affair diminishes her chances of becoming elected to public office, Arnold claims to be unregretful of her recent decisions.

“I participated in an extramarital affair beginning in August of this year. It was an excuse for an escape from an already declining marriage. I cannot regret the decisions I have made, but I can admit to being happier presently than before.

“It is for my ex husband, my children, my family and friends that I must publicly admit to my actions as I believe honesty and integrity are of utmost importance in life,” she added.

Gia Arnold is now stating that the remainder of her campaign funds will be donated to charity. That number is believed to be around $3,000. Politically, she refers to herself as a libertarian, as well as a tea party conservative.

The Huffington Post points out that, while extramarital affairs can indeed damage the reputations of politicians, this is not always the case.

"Rep. Vance McAllister (R-Louisiana), who was caught kissing one of his staffers in April, is running for re-election and is leading on recent poll. Last year, voters in South Carolina elected Rep. Mark Sanford (R) to Congress several years after he admitted to an affair when he was the state’s governor," reports the Huffington Post.
