Former Denver Broncos Quarterback John Elway Opposes Social Safety Nets (Video)

Former Denver Broncos quarterback and current team executive John Elway said today that he did not believe in social "safety nets," but also claimed "we’ve got to have some kind of safety nets."

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Elway was explaining why he is a Republican, notes (video below).

Elway, who won the Super Bowl twice, also said he contributed to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in 2012, noted

“I don’t believe in safety nets,” Elway explained. “Obviously, we’ve got to have some kind of safety nets. But I think my philosophy is when given the opportunity to go take advantage of that, I think that’s when you get the best out of people.”

“So, I would like to see us to be able to free up Congress a little bit and say, okay, we need to give up a little bit to give a little bit,” Elway added. “If we were able to do that and we acted more like businessmen in that situation, I believe we would get a lot more done.”

Elway did not say what "free up Congress" actually meant.
