Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been stripped of his honorary degree from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU) of Scotland following his call to ban all Muslims from entering the U.S. Meanwhile, a petition to ban the business mogul from the U.K. has already garnered 400,000 signatures.
Trump proposed banning any self-identifying Muslims from entering the U.S. following the Dec. 2 San Bernardino, California, mass shooting committed by a radicalized couple. His comments were condemned by both Democrats and Republicans alike, with House Speaker Paul Ryan declaring, “This is not conservatism.”
RGU had awarded Trump with a doctorate in business administration in October 2010. The business mogul has ancestry in Scotland through his mother, who was born in the Isle of Lewis, STV News reports.
"In the course of the current US election campaign, Mr Trump has made a number of statements that are wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university,” a RGU spokesman said in a statement, according to STV News. "The university has therefore decided to revoke its award of the honorary degree."
Suzanne Kelly, a contributing writer at Aberdeen Voice, created the petition to strip Trump of his degree. It earned more than 70,000 signatures.
Kelly had also created a petition on Nov. 28 calling for the U.K. to bar Trump from entry. The petition was added to the UK’s parliamentary website on Dec. 8, where it has since garnered over 400,000 signatures as of Dec. 10, transforming the request into an actual possibility, The Guardian reports.
“The more I looked at Donald Trump and the remarks he has made before entering the presidential race, the more my hackles were rising,” Kelly told The Guardian. “This man is no longer a joke in the corner, but someone who is aiming to become leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world.”
Trump has responded to these developments by taking to social media, BBC reports.
“The UK politicians should be thanking me,” Trump tweeted. "The United Kingdom is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem. Everybody is wise to what is happening. Very sad. Be honest."
