Trump: Illegal Immigrants 'Are Treated Better Than Our Veterans'

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed last Saturday that undocumented immigrants are often treated better than U.S. veterans in America. His comments were made during a speech at a National Federation of Republican Assemblies event in Nashville.

"[I]llegal immigrants, in many cases, not in all cases, but in many cases, are treated better than our veterans, who are the greatest people we have,” Trump said, according to

Trump was reportedly referring to the medical care that veterans get compared to the health care that undocumented immigrants experience in the U.S.

Trump also lashed out at DREAMers, children of undocumented immigrants, who protested his speech outside the venue with their parents.

“What about our children? … Why can’t our children that are in the country … Why can’t they be the DREAMERs?” Trump stated.

"[N]obody ever talks about them … we talk about the DREAMERs … we talk about the illegal immigrants, who, by the way, are treated better than the vets," Trump said.

Trump added that he would win the Latino vote in the 2016 election. However, Patricio Zamorano, executive director of the consulting firm, told AFP that Trump's immigrant bashing will ultimately backfire with Latino voters.

"What Trump is doing is political suicide," Zamorano said. "The Latino vote is essential in getting the next president elected."

Michael Cornfield, a political scientist at George Washington University, added: "The candidates, donors, and party elites are dazed by the public reactions to Trump. No one expected him to alter the agenda and last this long."
