Donald Trump is used to firing other people on his stupid reality show, but now he is firing himself from his latest stupid real-life escapade -- he will not be the moderator of a Republican presidential debate in Iowa.
Officially, Trump said in a statement to Fox News on Tuesday that he is dropping out because he has not yet ruled out the possibility of running for president as a third-party candidate.
"It is very important to me that the right Republican candidate be chosen to defeat the failed and very destructive Obama administration, but if that Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate, I am not willing to give up my right to run as an independent candidate. Therefore, so that there is no conflict of interest within the Republican Party, I have decided not to be the moderator of the Newsmax debate."
Trump would never admit it, but the real reason is likely because almost all of the GOP candidates have shunned the debate, with only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum agreeing to take part.
With his usual bravado, Trump said the debate with him at the helm would have been something to see.
"I believe this would not only have been the most watched debate, but also the most substantive and interesting debate!"
Such an after-the-fact, impossible to dispute comment is par for the course for Trump. When he announced he would not seek the GOP nomination, he insisted that he would have easily won and gone on to beat President Obama. The only thing holding him back was that he would have had to give up his stupid TV show and the millions of dollars that came with it. Ah, priorities.
