Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida has been rising in the polls while Donald Trump’s seemingly charmed summer has begun to fade, and the business mogul took the chance to attack his opponent while he filed paperwork to be on the primary ballot in New Hampshire.
Billionaire Paul Singer, an influential Republican donor and hedgefund manager, has decided to back Rubio, The Hill reports.
“Paul Singer represents amnesty and he represents illegal immigrants pouring into the country and now he’s with Rubio,” Trump said, according to the Boston Herald. “Rubio is totally in favor of very, very lax rules … Now Rubio is surging in New Hampshire? I don’t think so.”
Singer supports immigration reform, according to Breitbart. Rubio, the child of Cuban immigrants, also does.
“We have a broken enforcement system on immigration,” Rubio said during a “Face the Nation” interview in 2014. “We have a legal immigration system that's outdated and needs to be modernized so we can win the global competition for talent.
“We have millions of people living in this country illegally, many of whom have been here for a decade or longer. We need to find a reasonable but responsible way of incorporating them into American life.”
Trump, who has been campaigning on deportation, went so far as to declare Rubio would be out of the running soon.
“Rubio’s going down next,” he said, according to the Boston Herald.
