Former Vice President Dick Cheney will be the keynote speaker at the Republican Party of Florida’s (RPOF) first Sunshine Summit.
“The Sunshine Summit is a unique opportunity and event where presidential candidates will share their vision for the nation with the more than 2,500 expected activists and grassroots leaders,” RPOF chairman Blaise Ingoglia said.
The Sunshine Summit will run for three days in Orlando, Florida, beginning on Nov. 12 with the Cheney-led Statesman’s Dinner. It takes place roughly 100 days before Florida’s March 25 presidential preference primary, Politico reports.
All major Republican presidential candidates were sent invitations on Monday, according to Wadi Gaitan, a party spokesman.
“We will roll out more information on the summit, including presidential candidates that have confirmed their attendance, as we draw closer to the event,” Gaitan said.
“We have a strong lineup of Republican candidates this election and I know that our Party will be well positioned to take back the White House with whoever wins our Party’s nomination,” Ingoglia said.
The event was originally scheduled for October but due to the Legislature holding a special session from Oct. 19 to Nov. 6 to perform redistricting, during which lawmakers are prohibited from fundraising, the event was rescheduled, according to the Miami Herald.
The summit will not feature a straw poll.
"We thought long and hard about it," Gaitan said. "We have seen a movement away from the straw poll (Iowa is a recent example) and decided not to include one in this event.
"Candidates can focus on meeting and speaking with the grassroots without having to concentrate on a straw poll."
