Former Vice President Dick Cheney slammed Republican presidential candidate front-runner Donald Trump for his suggestion that the U.S. impose a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the country (video below).
Cheney blasted Trump during an interview on the "Hugh Hewitt Show," saying the real estate mogul’s proposal “goes against everything we stand for and believe in.”
“I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion goes against everything we stand for and believe in,” Cheney said.
“I mean, religious freedom's been a very important part of our history and where we came from."
Cheney added that Trump’s comments followed a “mistaken notion.”
“A lot people — my ancestors got here because they were Puritans. There wasn't anyone here when they came. But it's a mistaken notion.”
The former vice president also suggested that a “safety zone” be established for Syrian refugees in their home country, where they can be “secured.”
