Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse Faults Republicans For Oklahoma Tornado

Democratic Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse railed against Republicans yesterday during a 15-minute speech on the Senate floor, citing faulty GOP environmental policy as a cause of the Oklahoma tornado and other natural disasters.

“So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you, Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, care if we Republicans run off the climate cliff like a bunch of proverbial lemmings and disgrace ourselves?”

Whitehouse noted that both parties are “in this together," because of the tornado in Oklahoma, the wildfires of Texas and the acidic Oregon seas. He criticized Republicans for allowing their polluters and “deniers” to contribute to global warming, and therefore indirectly to environmental tragedies.

Conjuring memories of past Republican policies, Whitehouse said he hoped for a future when the party would return to its senses and become a “strong and a worthy adversary” once again.

“I don’t want this future,” Whitehouse said. “An America suffering from grave economic and environmental and diplomatic damage because we failed, because we didn’t wake up and do our duty to our people, and because we didn’t lead the world.”

Whitehouse criticized an unnamed Republican senator earlier this month, who claimed that God would not allow the human race to destroy the planet. Whitehouse argued that ignoring climate change and depending on “magical deliverance from our troubles” was bad policy and an immoral practice for any public representative.
