As President-elect Donald Trump continues to amass his incoming administration, some choices are raising ire from those within his own party. Yet David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader, applauded the selection as promising.

Among Trump’s more controversial administration picks was Steve Bannon as his chief strategist. Bannon is the former CEO of Breitbart News, which serves as a platform for the alt-right and is lauded by a wide range of white supremacist and white nationalist groups.

“Mr. Trump’s appointment of Bannon, Flynn and Sessions are the first steps in the project of taking America back,” Duke tweeted Nov. 18, notes The Washington Times.

“Trump Chief Strategist Bannon has repeatedly exposed the vicious war on White people on his Breitbart website,” Duke wrote in a Nov. 18 blog post to his own website.

The post later continues:

We must demand the protection of the civil rights of all Americans including white people!Everyone must be judged on their merit and not the unfair and destructive anti-white affirmative action racist policies that dominate major corporations, Federal, State, and city governments, colleges and educational institutions.

According to Politico, Duke tweeted on Nov. 8, following Trump’s election: “This is one of the most exciting nights of my life...make no mistake about it, our people have played a HUGE role in electing Trump! #MAGA”

Trump was slow to disavow Duke’s endorsement of his candidacy in January, but has since denounced the former KKK Grand Wizard.

Furthermore, The Crusader, the official paper of the KKK, endorsed Trump days before the election. Trump’s campaign team responded in a statement, saying: "Mr. Trump and the campaign denounces hate in any form. This publication is repulsive and their views do not represent the tens of millions of Americans who are uniting behind our campaign," reports CNN.

According to Politico, In November, Trump’s son, Eric, along with a personal adviser, said Duke "deserves a bullet."
