A new commercial set to air during Sunday football compares House Speaker John Boehner to a wailing baby, and blames him for the current government shutdown.
The ad features a close-up of a baby throwing a temper tantrum while a narrator says, "Speaker John Boehner didn't get his way on shutting down health care reform. So, he's shut down the government and hurt the economy."
Indeed, Boehner has been resistant to bring a measure to the floor that would stop the shutdown and allow Obamacare to commence as planned — and as Congress, the president and the Supreme Court have approved — even though such a resolution would likely pass with both Democratic and Republican votes.
Many believe that Boehner fears the wrath of Tea Party extremists, who may try to vote him out of his position as speaker if he gives up the fight in gutting the Affordable Care Act.
The ad was released by House Majority PAC, a friend of the Democratic Party.
"Speaker Boehner didn't get his way and so, like a child, he threw a Tea Party-inspired temper tantrum and shut down the federal government," said Andy Stone, the group's communications director. “Speaker Boehner should stop playing politics, end the nonsense and finally focus on the real-life consequences his government shutdown has caused Americans."
Validating the ad’s comparison, Boehner let his temper flare on Friday morning after reading an article he didn’t like in the Wall Street Journal. At a press conference, he flung the newspaper down and said, “This isn't some damn game! The American people don't want their government shut down and neither do I. All we are asking for is to sit down and to have a discussion and to bring fairness – re-open the government and bring fairness to the American people under Obamacare. It is as simple as that, and it all has to begin with a simple discussion."
