As funding ran out on the federal government without Congress passing a new spending bill causing the government to shut down operations and tell thousands of employees not to show up for work Tuesday morning, elected representatives responsible for the shutdown were hitting the sauce.
The reports of noticeable alcohol use came from members of the Capitol Hill press corps who took to Twitter to relay their impressions.
“About every other House member I just talked to smelled like booze,” tweeted Jennifer Bendery of the Huffington Post. “It’s only 9 pm. Wheeee!”
Her HuffPo colleague Sam Stein responded on Twitter: “Confirmed. Also, it’s a bipartisan affair.”
The reports of shutdown-eve imbibing come two days after other reporters said the same thing about congress as it debated what to do, if anything, to avoid closing the government.
Ginger Gibson of the Washington web site Politico tweeted, “I'm not over exaggerating when I say I can smell the booze wafting from members as they walk off the floor.”
Kate Nocera of Buzzfeed said that she encountered two congressmen in a nearby liquor store and that “more than 1” member was “putting a few back” earlier in the evening.
Gibson, however, tweeted that she did not get close enough to any one congress member to identify the source of the alcoholic aroma.
