The Drudge Report claimed today that Condoleezza Rice was the name near the top of Mitt Romney's vice presidential list.
Matt Drudge wrote on his web site:
Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.
And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice! The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.
However, Robert Costa, of National Review Online, tweeted tonight that Rice will not be Romney's choice: "Top Romney source tells me "no Condi." More: Romney wants someone more comfortable in 'attack dog' mode."
Judd Legum, editor of the progressive news website ThinkProgress.org, tweeted: "1. Condi will not be VP. 2. Romney using DRUDGE as a distraction. 3. Everyone is falling for it."
Rice, a former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State for former president George W. Bush, has been rumored to be the vice presidential pick, off-and-on, but has said she is not interested in the post.
Mitt Romney has said he will announce his choice before before the Republican convention in Tampa Bay, Florida, on August 27-30.
