Clinton Leads Popular Vote By More Than One Million

Hillary Clinton may have lost the presidential election, but she won the popular vote, with 1,003,796 more ballots cast for her than for Donald Trump, as of Nov. 15.

Dave Wasserman, of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, released a tally of all the votes counted so far, as provisional and mail-in ballots continue to trickle in, and millions of ballots remain uncounted. On Nov. 15, Clinton had 62,037,498 votes, while Trump had 61,033,702.

Many Democrats have said that Clinton should have won the election, and that her winning the popular vote but still losing to Trump is indicative of a flawed system.

"This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose," Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, who introduced a bill to Congress that would abolish the Electoral College system in favor of the popular vote, said in a statement, according to Bloomberg. "The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society."

Boxer is not the only Clinton supporter angry at the outcome of the election, as nearly 4,360,000 supporters have signed a petition on urging members of the Electoral College to vote for the Democratic candidate when they officially cast their ballots on Dec. 19, despite Trump winning in their states.

"If [members of the Electoral College] all vote the way their states voted, Donald Trump will win," says the petition, created by Elijah Berg of North Carolina. "However, they can vote for Hillary Clinton if they choose. Even in states where that is not allowed, their vote would still be counted, they would simply pay a small fine … So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?"

Trump easily won the majority of the Electoral College votes by winning key battleground states and some others that Democrats were easily expected to win, such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
