Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton called half of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's supporters "deplorables" and Trump is using her words against her in a video (below.)
“To just be grossly generalist, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call ‘the basket of deplorables,’” Clinton told a group of wealthy donors at a celebrity-studded fundraiser in New York City, reported CBS News. “Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that, and he has lifted them up.”
Clinton continued: “He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.”
But Clinton went on to say that the “other half” of Trump supporters are not necessarily racist bigots.
“The other basket, and I know because I look at this crowd, I see friends from all over America here. ... But that other basket of people are people who feel that government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures,” she said. “They are just desperate for change. Doesn’t really even matter where it comes from.”
Nonetheless, the “basket of deplorables” comment went viral as social media picked it up and media pundits wrote thought pieces about it.
Clinton's remark was even compared to 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's infamous 47 percent remark, where he told wealthy donors that 47 percent of people will vote for President Barack Obama “no matter what” because they believe they're entitled to government assistance.
“Hillary Clinton just had her 47% moment. What a terrible thing she said about so many great Americans!” Trump tweeted.
He also tweeted: “While Hillary said horrible things about my supporters, and while many of her supporters will never vote for me, I still respect them all!”
Trump, who hasn't purchased much airtime for TV ads compared to Clinton, according to CNN, released a TV ad where he hits Clinton for the “basket of deplorables” remark.
The ad plays the clip of Clinton making her statement and ends by saying she's “viciously demonizing hard-working people.”
