Calif. GOP Official Marilyn Davenport Sends Racist Obama Email

A California Republican party official -- and tea party activist -- who sent out a racist email comparing President Obama to a monkey insists she will not resign her post. Instead, she will use her time to find the "cowardly" person who leaked it to the media.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, Marilyn Davenport, an elected member of the Orange County Republican central committee, sent the email on Friday. It shows an Obama "family photo" -- with two chimpanzees as the parents, and Obama as the baby.

The tag line read: "Now you know why -- No birth certificate."

The Orange County Weekly reports that Davenport admitted sending the photo to "friends and acquaintances."

Well, one of them was apparently offended and leaked it to the media. Republican Party of Orange County chairman Scott Baugh said Davenport is busy looking for that person. But Baugh, who was one of those "friends and acquaintances" who got the original email, said Davenport should be busy writing her letter of resignation.

"It's a despicable message, it drips with racism and I think she should step down from the committee," he said, calling the photo "highly inappropriate."

However, Davenport said she isn't going anywhere. She wrote to the OC Weekly:

"I will NOT resign my central committee position over this matter."

Her letter also included a kind-of, sort-of apology:

"I'm sorry if my email offended anyone. I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth. In fact, the thought never entered my mind until one or two other people tried to make this about race."

Davenport of course blamed the media for all of this, saying the "average person knows and agrees this is much ado about nothing." She also said she is not a racist, pointing out that "I have friends who are black."
