Newly-confirmed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was prevented from entering a public school in Washington, D.C., by protesters who created a barrier in front of the building (video below).
When DeVos arrived at Jefferson Middle School in D.C., protesters physically barred her from entering the school and forced her to return to her vehicle and cancel her visit.
"She doesn't represent anything that they stand for," one protester told ABC News.
Protesters reportedly chanted, "Shame, shame, shame," as DeVos walked toward the middle school before turning around.
The protests against DeVos came after the controversial and unprecedented confirmation of her new role. DeVos' appointment was opposed on both sides of the aisle due to her inexperience with public schools and education in general. Much of the outrage was because of the fact that DeVos and her family spent years donating millions of dollars to Republican politicians' campaigns.
Her confirmation was delayed several times, with the votes coming down to a tie that was decided by Vice President Mike Pence.
Devon addressed the controversy surrounding her confirmation in a statement delivered on her first day on the job.
"The events of the last few weeks have likely raised more questions and spawned more confusion than they have brought light and clarity," DeVos said, Salon reported. "So, for starters, please know I’m a ‘door open’ type of person who listens more than speaks.
In her statement, DeVos made light of a highly-quoted remark she made during her hearing in which she said guns should be allowed in school to prevent attacks from "grizzlies." The confirmation process, she said, was "kind of a bear."
"We believe students deserve learning environments that foster innovation and curiosity, and are also free from harm," she said. "I’m committed to working with you to make this the case."
Many praised the protesters who blocked DeVos from entering the D.C. middle school, while others called for the elimination of her department altogether.
"Eliminate the Department of Education. The left has already marginalized itself with its meltdowns so the moderates will continue to side against them. Now is the time to continue to undo all their damage and self-correct the nation's direction," one viewer commented on YouTube.
