Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, with the help of former Obama campaign aides, raised $3 million for his presidential campaign in just four days.
Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist who is running as a Democrat against frontrunner Hillary Clinton, announced this week that he would be working with Revolution Messaging, a firm that includes staff members who worked on President Obama’s 2008 campaign.
Revolution Messaging will handle digital ads and online fundraising for Sanders’s campaign. Those at the firm who have a history with the President include founder Scott Goodstein, who ran Obama’s social media campaign, Arun Chaudhary, the first official White House videographer, and Obama campaign deputy researcher Shauna Daly.
“Like a lot of Obama supporters, we were looking for a candidate with a track record of doing the right thing -- even if it meant taking on Wall Street billionaires and other powerful interests. A candidate who could inspire a movement,” Goodstein said. “Bernie Sanders is that candidate.”
The $3 million raised by Sanders and his team consisted of approximately 75,000 donations, with an average contribution of $43. According to a campaign adviser, 99 percent of the donations were $250 or less.
The announcement of the Revolution partnership, as well as news of the funds raised, came on Wednesday after Sanders announced new legislation aimed at breaking up too-big-to-fail banks.
