Ben Carson: Hitler Could Happen In America (Video)

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, said he believes a Nazi-like regime could come to power in America.

Carson made his statement at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Sept. 30, saying that while many people believe a situation like that of Germany under Adolf Hitler could not happen in America, he thinks otherwise, CNN reports.

"I beg to differ," Carson said. "If you go back and look at the history of the world, tyranny and despotism and how it starts, it has a lot to do with control of thought and control of speech."

When speaking with reporters at a press conference following his speech (video below), Carson added that people need to speak up what they believe in if they want to prevent a Nazi-like regime from coming to power.

“Hitler changed things there and nobody protested," Carson added. "Nobody provided any opposition to him."

Reporters asked Carson who he thinks resembles Hitler in the U.S.

"I'm not going to go into that that. I think that example is pretty clear," Carson responded.

When asked by a reporter whether he was comparing President Barack Obama to Hitler, Carson said: “No. I am saying in a situation where people do not express themselves, bad things can happen."

This is not the first time Carson has made a controversial remark during his campaign for president. Last week, he said he would not support a Muslim presidential candidate.

Carson currently ranks second amongst the 15 GOP presidential candidates with 16.3 percent, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of samplings, The Hill reports.
