Officers in Baltimore, Maryland rescued a terrified dog that was abandoned on a highway while traffic whizzed by.

A witness reportedly spotted the dog on the Jones Falls Expressway and quickly alerted police. Officer Carlos Martinez, the first officer to respond, said the dog had been let out of a white vehicle that sped away once the dog was on the side of the highway.

“It was pretty scary ... traffic was just flying by, and I was the only one there talking to a dog for about 10 minutes until other units arrived,” Martinez said. The dog, according to Martinez, was hungry and cold.

“They got to it pretty easily. The dog was pretty compliant and just glad it was being taken off the open freeway,” Detective Ruganzu Howard said. The dog was eventually reunited with its owner thanks to a microchip.

“We're trying to figure out why somebody would do that,” Baltimore Animal Care and Rescue Shelter Director of Operations Lisa Morabito said.
