AZ Democrat Fred DuVal Releases Photo of Himself With ‘Hispanic’ Face, Nets $11K in Campaign Donations

A Phoenix businessman running for governor in Arizona digitally enhanced a picture of his face to look more Hispanic in order to show Republicans he’s a “good sport.”

Fred DuVal wants the Democratic nomination for governor, but the GOP has labeled him “The World’s Most Uninteresting Man,” in reference to the Dos Equis ad.

DuVal released an image of himself with an added white beard to look like the Dos Equis character played by Jonathan Goldsmith in commercials. His tag line reads, “Stay Desperate, My Friends.”

“DuVal digitally morphed himself to resemble the person pictured here, put the doctored image out on Twitter and hand-delivered a printed copy to the AZ GOP,” Arizon Republicans told the Arizona Daily Independent. “Painful attempts at humor, especially with racial overtones, usually backfire on candidates.”

DuVal said in a press release that he is “flattered” that the GOP would target him before he even secured a nomination. Democrats are hopeful that embracing the label the GOP gave him will boost his campaign. DuVal spokeswoman Leslie Sonnenklar said the stunt netted him $11,000 is donations.

Arizona Republicans are less enthusiastic about the photo.

“I don’t care how desperate for media coverage and attention you are; a gubernatorial campaign is no place for a racially motivated minstrel show,” said contributor to the Arizona Daily Independent Yolanda Weinberger. “I cannot believe that my Latino brothers and sisters–even those with good senses of humor–would encourage this type of activity when we need substance to make informed voting decisions. The Democratic Party should be ashamed to monetarily reward such behavior.”
