Artist Shepard Fairey Sues AP Over Iconic Obama Image

Publish date:

Shepard Fairey, the infamous street artist who created the iconic "Hope" image of Barack Obama, filed a lawsuit against The Associated Press on Monday, asking a judge to rule that his use of an AP photo in creating the poster did not violate copyright law.

Fairey's lawsuit is a counter against the Associated Press' demands that he compensate them for his use of  AP photographer Manny Garcia's 2006 photo of Obama, which Fairey used as the basis for his poster. However, Fairey's lawyer Anthony Falzone contends that his client's transformation of the photo into a "stunning, abstracted and idealized image that created powerful new meanings and conveys a radically different message" clears him of all copyright infringement charges.

In a separate event, Fairey was recently arrested in Boston on graffiti-related charges. He has plead not guilty.
