50 Top Republicans Label Trump A National Security Risk

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump "is not qualified to be president," according to a letter signed by 50 GOP national security and foreign policy officials who have worked for previous Republican administrations.

“From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump is not qualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief,” the letter stated, which was signed by several officials who worked for President George W. Bush's administration and oversaw the Iraq War, which many believe to be the worst foreign policy blunder in U.S. history, according to The Washington Post. “Indeed, we are convinced that he would be a dangerous President and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.”

“In addition,” the letter continued, “Mr. Trump has demonstrated repeatedly that he has little understanding of America’s vital national interests, its complex diplomatic challenges, its indispensable alliances, and the democratic values on which U.S. foreign policy must be based.”

Although the harsh criticism of Trump didn't give way to an explicit endorsement of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, the letter insinuates she is the preferred choice.

“We understand that many Americans are profoundly frustrated with the federal government and its inability to solve pressing domestic and international problems. We also know that many have doubts about Hillary Clinton, as do many of us,” the letter states. “But Donald Trump is not the answer to America’s daunting challenges and to this crucial election. We are convinced that in the Oval Office, he would be the most reckless President in American history.”

Signatories of the letter include Eric Edelman, a top national security adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney, and Tom Ridge, former secretary of Homeland Security during the George W. Bush administration.

In response, Trump issued a scathing statement that criticized the officials for making foreign policy mistakes in the past that continue to put the U.S. at risk today.

“These insiders -- along with Hillary Clinton -- are the owners of the disastrous decisions to invade Iraq, allow Americans to die in Benghazi, and they are the ones who allowed the rise of ISIS,” Trump said. “Yet despite these failures, they think they are entitled to use their favor trading to land taxpayer-funded government contracts and speaking fees. It’s time we put our foot down and declare that their gravy train is over: No longer will Crooked Hillary Clinton and the other disasters in Washington get rich at our expense.”
