15 Republicans Demand to Know Why Dept. of Homeland Security is Buying Bullets

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) and 14 other House Republicans have signed a letter asking the Department of Homeland Security to explain (again) why it is buying 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition.

In the letter, Rep. LaMalfa (pictured) echoes right wing internet rumors and conspiracy theories that the bullet purchasing is somehow tied to some devious plan by the Obama Administration to deny Americans access to ammunition, reports

“The extraordinary level of ammunition purchases made by Homeland Security seems to have, in states such as my own, created an extreme shortage of ammunition to the point where many gun owners are unable to purchase any,” Rep. La Malfa wrote in the letter. “Are these purchases being conducted in a manner that strategically denies the American people access to ammunition?"

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees numerous branches of law enforcement, has repeatedly stated that the purchases are for on-duty officers and those in training, reported

Proposed gun control legislation for assault weapons and the Department of Homeland Security buying bullets has created a fever pitch among gun owners and far right wing groups.

Oddly, there was no hysteria for six years when the Department of Homeland Security bought bullets under the Bush administration.

Sarah Palin claimed last month that the federal government was “stockpiling bullets in case of civil unrest," but offered no proof.

One fact that is undeniable: the enormous profits that gun and ammunition makers are reaping from the paranoia.
