Thousands of People Apply for 200 Jobs at Target Store

Thousands of people have applied for 200 jobs to fill new Target store in Albuquerque, New Mexico, over the past three days.

Target was holding a job fair at the Marriott Uptown where lines were snaking around the building, reports KOAT Action 7 News.

Given the high number of applicants, job hunters candidates have about a one in 35 chance in getting a job.

Applicant Natalie Bryant said her skills, personality and "great looks" would help her get a job.

Pauly Garcia told KOAT Action 7 News: "Good luck, because I'm going to blow those people out of the water with my interview."

Target plans to make some hires this week. The rest will be hired two weeks before the new store opens on March 10.

Studies have shown that the longer a person is unemployed, the weaker his or her chances are of getting a job, which is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Opposing Viewsrecently reported on the "hopelessly unemployed," about three million Americans who want a job, but haven't searched for employment in at least a year.

The fastest growing demographic of hopelessly unemployed workers are over age 55, who usually have a harder time finding jobs. These could include older workers who would prefer to have kept their jobs, but were pushed into early retirement because of the recession.
