It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

Windsor, Ontario, police are currently staking out the bowels of a 52-year-old man who allegedly swallowed a stolen diamond worth about $20,000. Sgt. Brett Corey claims that his suspect swallowed the precious jewel when he realized that police at Precision Jewelers were on to him.

“We are monitoring his bowel movements, if you will,” said Sgt. Corey, according to CBC News. “Our forensic identification people are the lucky ones who have to go through the waste to obtain the diamond once it passes.”

The man allegedly harboring the diamond in his gut has been charged with a theft of over $5,000 for stealing the valuable stone.

Dan Thomas, a 25-year veteran of the jewelry business, says he’s never seen anything quite like this case. According to Thomas’ account, the suspect tried to steal the diamond using sleight of hand.

“[The alert clerk] noticed that he had fumbled with the stone and she thought right away that he had switched the stone, so when it was handed back to her, she said, ‘I don’t think this was the stone I gave you,’ and he said, ‘No, no, this is what you gave me. I don’t have anything on me.’”
