Nevada Brothels Hit Hard By Bad Economy, Internet Competition

Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the U.S. and the economic crunch is even affecting prostitutes.

The state's unemployment rate in July was 9.5 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Money is so tight that women who work in legal brothels in Nevada are actually having to offer specials for their adult services.

“I offer a lot more specials and discounts and incentives for people to come in to see me. People are looking for deals," Taylor, a prostitute at the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, told Bloomberg News.

Susan Austin, the madam for the Mustang Ranch brothel, added: "A lot of our clients don’t have the discretionary income they had six years ago, five years ago. The ones that can come in, they aren’t spending quite what they were spending before.”

“They’re getting less services because they’re paying less, but they’re still seeing their favorite ladies. It’s like anything: When the economy takes a dive, you just live with less frills.”

There's also competition online. Prostitutes offer their services covertly on Craigslist and had over 500 sex ads for Las Vegas on August 25. The ads included captions such as: “Teach Me... Spank Me... Pull My Hair!!!!” and “Fun, freaky, flirty, fulfill, favored, fetish friendly.”
