Microsoft is apologizing after sending out a tweet that some saw as a crass attempt to cash in on the death of singer Amy Winehouse.
On Monday, a message was sent from a Twitter account called Microsoft UK PR, which promotes the company's Xbox system, that said:
Remember Amy Winehouse by downloading the ground-breaking ‘Back to Black’ over at Zune.
About an hour after the page was bombarded with angry messages, an apology was offered:
Apologies to everyone if our earlier Amy Winehouse ‘download’ tweet seemed purely commercially motivated. Far from the case, we assure you.
However, the motivation for the original message was not explained. Then a little later:
With Amy W’s passing, the world has lost a huge talent. Our thoughts are with Amy's family and friends at this very sad time.
Microsoft is not the only company that appears to be trying to make a buck off of Winehouse's death. Apple had a picture of Winehouse on the front page of its iTune's store, as late as this morning, with a caption that read, "Remembering Amy Winehouse." However, that picture is no longer there.
