House Passes Debt Deal; Could Pave Way to Final Deal

The House Friday afternoon passed a Republican deal to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a government default. The bill will almost certainly be defeated in the Democratic-controlled Senate, but it could pave the way for a compromise bill.

The House vote was 218-210 --  a vote that was delayed for a day so it could be reworked to make it more palatable to Tea Party members.

If the Senate votes against it on later Friday as expected, lawmakers would work through the weekend to come up with a compromise bill. Votes could take place on Monday or Tuesday, a Democratic aide told Reuters, making it to President Obama's desk just in time.
