Forbes announced its annual ranking of the 400 richest Americans, with Bill Gates once again topping the list at $72 billion.
Gates still operates a controlling interest in Microsoft, and though he gives billions away each year through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, his wealth has continued to grow rapidly.
This is the twentieth year in a row that Gates has retained the number one spot on the Forbes 400 list.
Warren Buffet came in at second place with a net worth of $58.5 billion. In third place, Oracle’s Larry Ellison earned a fortune of $41 billion.
Mark Zuckerberg was the second largest earner in the past year, gaining $9.6 billion and returning to the Top 20 after dropping to #36 the year before.
There are 48 women on the list, including heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune Jennifer Pritzker, formerly known as James Pritzker and the first transgender billionaire.
The average wealth of a Forbes 400 member is $5 billion, the highest to date, and has increased almost $1 billion since the year before.
The combined wealth of every person on the list is $2 trillion, up from $1.7 trillion in 2012, and the highest amount ever due to real estate and U.S. stock strength.
