Father and Daughter, Michael and Miranda Mogg, Set to Deploy Together to Afghanistan

A father and daughter are going to be deployed together to Afghanistan next month.

Miranda Mogg, 21, and her father Michael Mogg, 47, currently serve together in the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade based at Fort Drum in northern New York. The Moggs will be among 1,800 soldiers deployed from the brigade next month.

"If you're going to go to war, you should go with people you know," Miranda told the Watertown Daily Times newspaper. "It's surreal. I grew up with him always away, and now I get a chance to be out there."

The father-daughter roles, however, will be flipped as Miranda’s job is as an intelligence analyst, which involves identifying enemy activity and threats, while her father serves as the helicopter’s master gunner.

"For once she gets to tell me what to do," joked Michael, a 29-year army veteran.

This is the fifth deployment for the seasoned vet, and Miranda’s first. Although, this isn’t her first time at Fort Drum — the family was stationed there from 1994 until 2001, when Miranda was still in primary school. After bouncing around to a few U.S. and Germany bases, Michael and his wife returned to Fort Drum in 2008 and was joined again by Miranda in November, who has served in the military for two years.

The helicopter brigade is set to be away for nine months and will serve as an assist in a variety of roles for the troops.
