Facebook Rolls Out New News Feed

Publish date:

Facebook said today that it will be launching a revamped News Feed design as of Thursday.

Facebook representatives, including founder Mark Zuckerberg, announced the change today from Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. The desktop changes will start on Thursday, and the mobile and tablet interfaces will be changing in the next few weeks.

During the announcement, Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of the News Feed feature to Facebook, describing it as one of the “three pillars of the Facebook ecosystem” along with the Timeline and Graph Search features.

The design changes, according to Zuckerberg, are to enhance the visual nature of users’ posts, as well as to “give everyone in the world the best personalized newspaper in the world.” As of the end of 2011, nearly 50 percent of all content posted to the News Feed included a visual element because of the growing use of smart phones and tablets. The antiquated News Feed feature was not originally created to best feature visual content, which was the main reason behind the revamping.

“How we are all sharing is changing. And the design of your newsfeed needs to reflect this evolving face of News Feed and who you’re sharing with,” he said.

The redesign is also in part for the advertisers, who will now be able to create more attractive and interactive ads. After all, it is the advertisers who help the business keep the lights on. Part of the strategy, as Facebook revealed, is to give users more feed customization capabilities, which will in turn help give advertisers more customized data to target consumers.

Nevertheless, the company said that their ultimate goal with the News Feed is "always to show each individual the most relevant blend of stories that maximizes engagement and interest."
