Facebook Plans to Monetize Instagram, Users Revolt

Facebook recently confirmed that it will start “monetizing” Instagram, an application that it bought for $1 billion in April. The news has already generated anger among Instagram users.

Facebook Vice-President of Global Marketing Solutions Carolyne Everson told Business Insider: “There are many brands that use Instagram right now to try to get a feel for how to engage with their followers. We will definitely be figuring out a monetization strategy.”

Everson did not give any specific information on the “monetization,” but it could mean ads would start to appear with Instagram images or sponsored images could be added on users’ feeds.

Adding advertisements to Instagram would likely discourage many users, who have promised on Twitter to delete their Instagram accounts because of any ads.
