Dave Burgstrum Tries to Sell Coffin, Skeleton Inside

Dave Burgstrum was questioned by police after he put an antique coffin, with a full skeleton inside, on sale on CraigsList.

The coffin (pictured) was listed for $12,000.

However, police in Council Bluffs, Iowa, told Burgstrum that without proper ID papers, human bones cannot be legally sold.

Burgstrum made the macabre offer to pay property taxes on a hall belonging to a now-defunct chapter of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which started in Council Bluffs in 1852.

The bones were sent to the Pottawattamie County Medical Examiner’s Office, who sent the remains to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Laboratory.

Burgstrum told The Daily Nonpareil that a local historian said the skeleton was donated to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows by a local doctor in the 1880s.

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a global altruistic organization, which promotes helping others.

Burgstrum said the coffin was used in a ritual conducted by the organization.
