Three men from Brooklyn were caught allegedly trying to join the Islamic State terrorist group, also known as ISIS, today.
Abdurasul Juraboev and Akhror Saidakhmetov will be arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court; Abror Habibov, who was caught in Florida, will be arraigned in Jacksonville.
Juraboev, 24, is from Uzbekistan. In an online post dated Aug. 9, he said he wanted to kill President Obama because of his support for Israel.
“What I'm saying is to shoot Obama and then get shot ourselves, will it do?” he wrote, according to the New York Daily News. “That will strike fear in the heart of infidels.”
Under the alias Abdulloh ibn Hasan, Juraboev wrote, “I am in USA now but we don’t have any arms. Is it possible to commit ourselves as dedicated martyrs anyway while here?”
According to FBI Assistant Director in Charge Diego Rodriguez, the three man planned to join ISIS “by flying to Turkey in a vain attempt to evade detection.”
Their backup plan was to commit a terror attack in the U.S.
Saidakhmetov, 19, is from Kazakhstan. According to court papers, he told an informant “I will just go and buy a machine gun, AK-47, go out and shoot all police.”
“We will go and purchase one handgun ... then go and shoot one police officer ... boom!” he said. “Then we will take his gun, bullets and a bulletproof vest ... then we will do the same with a couple of others. Then we will go to the FBI headquarters, kill the FBI people.”
Saidakhmetov’s mother prevented him from traveling by refusing to give him his passport. On Feb. 19, she told him it was a sin to live in a “land of infidels."
The three men had been under FBI surveillance for quite some time, and they never posed a serious threat to security.
Saidakhmetov was stopped at Kennedy Airport by a FBI-NYPD Joint Terror Task Force while trying to fly to Turkey.
Juraboev was set to leave next month, but he was arrested at home.
Habibov, 30, from Uzbekistan, was arrested in Florida. He gave Saidakhmetov money to buy a plane ticket to Istanbul.
