An American tourist was killed and another critically injured after a visit to a lion park in Johannesburg, South Africa on June 1.
Disturbing reports from EWN say the two people were driving through the lion park with their windows rolled down when a lion crawled inside and grabbed the woman. The woman, said to be in her 40s, died from her injuries, and the male passenger was reportedly critically injured after trying to push the lion off the woman.
“Our staff working at the top of the camp tried to get the lion away from the car,” Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager for the lion park, said, reported the Mirror. “Ambulances were called immediately but it was too late. This is not a common occurrence. We have plenty of signage at the park, indicating that windows should always be closed while driving in the lion park. Brochures are handed out to all of the tourists who visit the park. I really don’t understand why people think its okay to leave windows open.”
Similar incidences have reportedly occurred in recent years (video below), and The Daily Mirror notes that around 250 deaths per year are caused by lions.
