A bow hunter, Richard Wesley, recently filmed a black bear as it attacked him in Fire River, Ontario, Canada (video below).
Wesley posted his video of the incident on YouTube on May 22 with a description:
I am so happy after this confrontation with a black bear during our spring hunt. No wounds except a bruised elbow and ego where the bear threw me down. Genuinely happy that this was a non fatal or tragic outcome. Proving that the black bear is a wild and unpredictable animal. Again so happy with the outcome.
In the video, the bear moves slowly in the distance as Wesley walks with his bow and arrow.
As the bear comes closer, Wesley tries to frighten the beast off with some noises, but the creature quickly advances, and the hunter looks as if he is knocked to the ground.
There is some grunting and growling for a few seconds, and then Wesley gets back up and says, "I should have shot him a long time ago... scared me to death."
According to the Toronto Sun, Wesley lives in Hearst, Ontario, and filmed the attack with a Go-Pro style camera.
Back on Wesley's YouTube page, there were plenty of comments about the viral video:
And this is how us canadians milk maple syrup from black bears.
When your Archery skill is only level 1.
Nothing wrong with hunting if you're gonna eat it. This dude was going old school with a longbow so that's impressive too.
You spooked the bear and didnt make yourself known earlier.
I doubt that very much. The bear's not blind. I was hiding behind a tree and just moved a half inch and the bear I thought I was hiding from saw me instantly. They know when something doesn't belong.
What to do when you see a black bear: Identify yourself by speaking in a calm, appeasing tone. Back away slowly, preferably in the direction you came. Walk, don't run.
I have better idea: shoot the damn monster between the eyes!
Did you get a shot off did you kill the bear at least or did it run off after knocking you down? Fill us in on what happened!!
I don't think he killed the bear. Would have taken a lot of arrows to put that down. Most likely scared it off or wounded it with a knife/arrow head.
With black bears I think you're supposed to charge toward them and they'll usually go away. With Zodiac bears you're supposed to accept your fate and die.
