A wedding proposal turned bloody when a man knifed his girlfriend to death after she said no. (Warning: The photos below are graphic.)
When the woman said she wanted to end the relationship, the would-be fiance began screaming, "If I can't have you, no one else will!" according to the Daily Mail.
He then reportedly pursued the 23-year-old woman into a grocery store as she screamed for help. Witnesses say he then stabbed her 17 times before turning the knife on himself in an attempt to take his own life.
"A man stabbed his girlfriend out of jealousy, because she refused to continue the relations with him," police determined, according to Daily Mail.
The suspect, 26, is listed in grave condition, and a murder investigation has been opened.
The incident, which is being investigated by the Russian Investigative Committee, took place in Ufa, an oil-rich city in the region of Bashkortostan.
Eyewitness reports shared on social media confirmed that after the suspect attacked the woman, he plunged the knife into his own chest and begged bystanders to "finish me off" as he lay writhing on the ground next to her fallen body.
The victim's family cited the suspect's prior criminal record as the primary reason they had never thought of him as a suitable husband for their daughter.
"He wanted my daughter to marry him," a woman, thought to be the victim's mother, says in a Facebook video taken at the scene. "And she did not want [to] so he stabbed her. A*shole!"
A man filming video at the scene says he stopped the suspect from fleeing.
"This scum was going to flee [and] I held him," the bystander said. "Scum, looks like he stabbed himself, too? ... Did you stab yourself? A*shole."
A store clerk, visibly shaken, said a police officer told her the victim died at the scene.
According to reports, the man came up to the woman in front of the store, giving her flowers when she arrived.
She allegedly rejected his marriage proposal, and told him she wanted to break up with him.
Within minutes, she was dead.
"We are still in shock," the clerk said. "What happened here was a nightmare ... He began to knife her. And then stab himself."
