Two men were detained by police on Oct. 12 in connection with the case of a 4-year-old girl who was raped and beaten with stones in New Delhi, India.
The assault took place on Oct. 8, according to Reuters.
"We are questioning the men in our custody and trying to help the victim's father obtain best medical care for the child," senior police officer Vijay Singh told Reuters.
Singh said the parents don't earn much money and that the family lives in a slum.
Doctors announced that the little girl suffered serious injuries to her intestines and sexual organs, and will require numerous surgeries over the next six months, notes NDTV. She reportedly has bites and bruises all over her body.
The child's father claimed that his daughter was lured with food and money by one of the attackers to a nearby jungle, where she was raped by two men who planned to kill her. The attackers heard a woman approaching and left the girl to die as she bled, the dad said. Amazingly, the little girl managed to crawl home.
She named her attackers, who could be charged with attempted murder in addition to rape.
Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, visited the girl in a hospital and said that her injuries were "horrific."
"Visited the little girl, her condition cant be described. Horrific. Her parents are extremely poor. When will this heinous crime stop in Del," she tweeted, according to NDTV.
