In the most highly anticipated match-up of UFC 119, Frank Mir knocked out Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on Saturday night at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
When all was said and done, it was Mir’s knee to Filipovic’s chin in the last minute of the fight that ultimately finished off an absolutely dull display of fighting.
Mir and Filipovic spent much of the fight circling one another trying to find non-existent openings, and the crowd got noticeably agitated at one point. This all changed when with about a minute remaining in the bout, Mir pulled Filipovic’s head down and kneed him in the chin.
Filipovic clearly never saw the move coming, and he went down to the ground hard as soon as it connected. Seeing his opponent stunned from the shot, Mir jumped on top of him and finished the fight with a few punches before referee Herb Dean pulled him off.
Mir improved to 14-5 after the match, while Filipovic dropped to 27-8-2.
Even the winner, Mir, had to acknowledge that the fight didn’t go according to plan.
“It looked kind of ugly, but I’d rather pull off an ugly win rather than get an ugly loss,” Mir said after the match.
