The Daiquiri Factory, a bar in Spokane, Wash., recently launched a new drink called “Date Grape Koolaid," which plays off the words "date rape."
The Spokesman-Review reports the bar announced the new drink in a Facebook posting, which enraged women, who posted in response:
Date Grape Koolaid is not a clever or funny name. It is offensive and condones sexual assault.
I am disgusted and mortified by your jest at sexual assault. I can only hope that you will wise up and change the name of your drink.
I can’t believe more people haven’t picked up on this. Date Grape Koolaid?
Without a hint of irony, the bar's general manager Alex Dang told The Spokesman-Review, "Our concept is give Spokane what it hasn’t had. We’re catering to women.”
According to CrooksandLiars.com, the Daiquiri Factory hit back on Facebook, but those responses just added fuel to the fire last Saturday, when dozens of protesters stood outside the Daiquiri Factory (video below).
“As someone who has survived rape twice, the most recent one being three months ago, it tells me and other survivors that our experiences don’t matter and that people either don’t believe us or don’t care about us and that all we are is a punch line,” protester Taylor Malone told KHQ.
