Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal recently called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood, claiming that the fetus is the patient during an abortion and that abortions are not health care (video below).
Jindal made his announcement based on a heavily-edited video of a Planned Parenthood official, which was shot undercover by a pro-life group. The video in question, which has sparked controversy, has been used as proof by pro-life advocates that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue.
Jindal made his comments on a radio show hosted by Steve Deace in Iowa on July 17, reports RightWingWatch.org.
Jindal first claimed that the "left" did not want abortion to be "rare," and later added:
"What was grotesque about (the video) was the values that were revealed. You know, they try to defend themselves by saying this is health care and patient-centered. This is not health care. Abortions are not health care, and this is not about the patient. The patient in this case is that unborn baby. They’ve got no concern for the unborn baby, and you can see that in the video."
BuzzFeed reported last week that Planned Parenthood claims its official in the video was referring to fetal tissue research and being reimbursed for transport costs, not selling body parts. Fetal tissue research is legal, has been going on in the U.S. since the 1960s, and has reportedly saved millions of lives by helping to develop vaccines.
Thus, instead of supporting the black market selling of fetal body parts, Planned Parenthood was engaging in the perfectly legal business of organ donation.
