Eden Hazard found a special new way to embarrass himself and his team on Wednesday.
Frustrated mostly by his own ineptness and Chelsea’s inability to do much of anything against Swansea City, Hazard decided to take his frustrations out on a ball boy. How, you ask? Oh, you know, the usual: by kicking him in the ribs for no legitimate reason whatsoever.
Fortunately Hazard's stupid decision, apparently motivated by a desire to get the ball passed to him a little faster, didn’t go unnoticed; an official immediately gave him a red card.
After the game Chelsea’s manager, Rafa Benitez, said that both Hazard and the ball boy had spoken and apologized to one another. The ball boy apologized for lagging with the ball; Hazard apologized for being a terrible human being.
The problem with that is, of course, that the ball boy shouldn’t have apologized. It doesn’t matter if he was stalling. It doesn’t matter what he was doing, really. No action short of taking a swing at somebody justifies kicking someone in the ribs.
Apology or not, some sort of real punishment needs to be handed down for this embarrassing act.
