The Browns struck out on their first choices, but they still ended up getting a guy they are presumably happy with. Rob Chudzinski was certainly not a name that was at the top of the list of possible candidates for the coaching vacancy. In fact, Chudzinski wasn’t even interviewed by any other NFL team this offseason.
Is he the right choice for the Browns? Maybe, but he wasn’t a good hire.
After verbally swinging for the fences and going after the crème de la crème of coaching candidates, they hire a guy that most people have never heard of. He doesn’t have a ton of experience but he has admittedly had some success in Carolina. Also, and maybe more importantly, Chudzinski grew up a Browns fan. He wooed owner Jim Haslem with his passion for the Browns organization.
Did the Browns hire with their heart rather than their head? I think so.
Norv Turner will be joining Chudzinski in Cleveland and he will be a good fit. It was necessary to hire a coordinator that can guide the young head coach along and Turner certainly has experience and success in that department. The long time Chargers head coach will be a good fit in Cleveland and his offense could have some success if he can help Brandon Weeden along in his development.
Dick Jauron is the rumored name to join the coaching staff as the defensive coordinator, however it isn’t official yet. If true, I think this is a great hire. Jauron has been a part of some great defenses and also has head coaching experience. I think he’ll be a perfect match to go along with Turner to help Chudzinski along in the process of becoming a head coach.
All in all, I think the staff that Haslem is putting together is a good one. Although Chudzinski isn’t a home run hire, the addition of Turner and Jauron will really help him out and allow the Browns to not suffer the learning curve of their new head coach. I doubt the Browns make a run at the division title next year, but they have shown that they have a lot of talent in place and with a good draft or two they are certainly going to be in the hunt in years to come.
