Yesterday, we learned that Brent Grimes was lost for the season. Have no fear, today the Falcons signed cornerback Terrence Johnson to take his place on the roster. Wait a minute...who is Terrence Johnson?
So who is Terrance Johnson? He was originally signed by New England after being undrafted in 2010. His first game action was in Indianapolis last year where he started two games. The Falcoholic says he "showed a penchant for being able to catch up with and tackle guys but not necessarily to stop them from catching the ball".
I think Johnson was signed because there simply wasn't a "quick fix" out there for Thomas Dimitroff to scoop up. The Falcons will try Christopher Owens at the third CB spot and I think Johnson was signed because they see talent in him and want to see if he's an upgrade over Robert McClain or Dominique Franks. How Owens does over the next week or two will depend on how aggressively Dimitroff will have to get with bringing in a more veteran presence for the defensive backfield.
Our buddy Knox Bardeen thinks the Grimes injury "could turn out to be a devastating injury for the Falcons". We hope he's wrong but it will indeed be an uphill battle to replace Grimes. There is no question that it will hurt at least a bit against Denver.
