In the NFL, injuries are simply part of the game. The Falcons have seen it first hand this season when they lost Brent Grimes and rookie Bradie Ewing for the season. Let's take a look at which injuries are making the news right now for the Falcons.
Stephen Nicholas (ESPN NFC South Blog):
Outside linebacker Stephen Nicholas suffered an ankle injury at Washington and his status for Sunday’s Oakland game remains unclear. Nicholas and fellow outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon have been getting the majority of the playing time. But the Falcons have been leaving middle linebacker Akeem Dent on the field a little more in recent games. Robert James and veteran Mike Peterson also can play the outside.
The Stephen Nicholas injury is a pretty big deal. He's been playing very well so far in Nolan's defense and when he leaves the field we simply don't have someone who can step right into his shoes. Dent has been playing more in recent games but that's because we've been playing more against the run than the pass happy teams we played earlier in the season (Broncos, Chargers).
Corey Peters (AJC)
Defensive tackle Corey Peters [stress fractured foot] is close to returning but remains on the reserve/non-football injury list.
“He’s been working with our athletic performance group on the side,” Smith said. “There will be a decision-making process in the term [physically unable to perform] from Week 6 through Week 9, where you can come off the list. That’s coming up very quickly.”
The decision will be coming up soon on Peters. If he can get healthy it would be a huge boost to the run defense to get him back into the mix on the defensive line.
D Led also mentioned that back-up TE Michael Palmer is not expected to be back until after the bye week. Tony Gonzalez has been playing out of his mind but there really isn't anything behind him right now as the Falcons have even been playing Joe Hawley a bit at the position and it was scary trying to watch him catch a pass last Sunday.
