Getting to the Bottom of Mark Richt's Hip Injury

| by

In non-irritating matters, Mark Richt will become yet another SEC coach to have hip surgery while on the job.  Unlike Derek Dooley, the latest hip surgery patient, Richt's hip injury was not related to water skiiing, but the result of EXTREME SWINGING on a swing set and P90x.  Not at the same time because that would be pretty amazing.  Richt explains:

“I was trying to show (my wife) what a good swinger I was.  I was swinging really high on a big heavy swing set with those big heavy chains. Sometimes if you go super high, on the way back you get a little bit of that lag. You’ve got those big S-hooks on top, and you’re swinging, and I swung enough to where the one on the left came out.

So it comes out, but I didn’t know. I’m still on the swing. So when I come back down, the chain on [on the right] stayed taut and the other one just goes. I turned sideways and the first thing that hits the ground is my left hip. Just smashed it.

It was traumatic. I mean, when I hit I was like, ‘I think I broke it.’ I couldn’t hardly breathe. Sometimes with an injury like that you get a full-body sweat and a little nauseous. But the pain kind of went away and I went about my business, until about a year and a half ago.”

The swing set injury occurred in the early 90s, but the pain recently returned due to Richt's P90x workouts.

“I thought I just had a hip-flexor injury. But I said if I quit now I’m just going to get fat. So I just kept doing it.”

DELICIOUS HONESTY.  Richt eventually went to the doctor who told him he'd either have to live with the pain or have the hip replaced.  Once the season ends, Richt will most likely be getting a new shiny hip.  And here he is yesterday using a whiteboard to break down the intricacies of S-hooks, which were the root of his swing incident.

While very thorough and analytical, the story shouldn't be left to our imaginations.  So, through the majesty of visual aides, here's what that day in the early 90s and the more recent day in the Richt home 100% for sure looked like:
