As many expected they would, the LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide clashed in what could only be described as battle that was anything but aesthetically pleasing to the non-purists.
It was a prototypical, knock-‘em-sock-‘em SEC battle where the two opposing defenses found themselves in the thick of things all the way to the bitter end. The game was ultimately decided on a 25-yard field goal in overtime by Drew Alleman, who gave his Tigers a 9-6 victory.
Neither team made it into the other's end zone at any point.
"This is the way football is supposed to be played," defensive end Sam Montgomery said after the game. "It's not about running up the score. This is how two great teams in a great atmosphere are supposed to play."
Unfortunately, the flip side to LSU reaffirming itself as the unquestionable No. 1 team ranked in the nation is that some Alabama folks took the news pretty hard.
As in, really hard.
The good folks at The Big Lead brought this to our attention, and it’s a (moving) picture that’s worth a thousand words. It perfectly illustrates just how heart-wrenching these highly anticipated, winner-take-all showdowns are for the fans in the trenches who have so much of their hearts invested in what happens on Saturday.
Check out a fan tearing up after it became clear that the Crimson Tide would forfeit their claim to “best in the nation” status below.
If it’s any consolation, most fans don’t have a cute girl consoling them when their team inevitably (maybe) blows their chance at the BCS title game.
