Saturday was terrible for Georgia Tech any which way you want to look at it, but no single play encapsulates just how bad things got more than Orwin Smith’s own safety.
With his team down by 10 in the early going, Smith caught the ball and began to return it – no doubt hoping to pick up some major yardage. For whatever reason, though, after he made his first move, second thoughts popped into Smith’s mind. Maybe he saw something in the Miami return coverage, maybe it was just a natural, inexplicable hesitation.
Unfortunately, when he hesitated, Smith lost control and his momentum wound up carrying him forward. In an effort to stay upright, Smith put his hand onto the field, which in turn left part of his body inside the endzone and part of it ouside – an own safety.
The whole thing was just and as weird and cringeworthy as it sounds.
Georgia Tech wound up losing in overtime 42-36.
