Frank Martin has been scouting the nation, it seems, looking to fill a depleted roster for the Gamecocks and Carrera will take the last available scholarship for the Gamecocks in this upcoming 2012-2013 season.
Carrera is a name that seemingly came out of nowhere but just recently visited the Gamecocks within the past few days on an official visit. Current Gamecock point guard Eric Smith tweeted out on Thursday night that Carrera was joining the Gamecocks but nothing official came until this afternoon when Gunter tweeted that Carrera will sign with the Gamecocks on Monday.
The 6'6" player originally from Venezuela has been playing for Montrose Christian in Maryland. He has offers from such schools as Gonzaga, George Mason, George Washington, Pittsburgh, Temple and Richmond.
He averaged 13.2 points per game and 12.2 rebounds as a senior. The thing that sticks out with Carrera is he plays bigger than his height. He's a player with a high work ethic and hustle. There is a lot of energy on the court when Carrera is on the floor and he's someone who isn't afraid to get in the mix down low. The offensive part of his game is said to be improving as well.
The Gamecocks were in need of an overhaul after a few dismal seasons. New coach Frank Martin has brought in a ton of energy already and his recruiting class for the 2012-2013 season seems to mimic what Martin will bring as well.
Carrera is another part of the rebirth of South Carolina basketball. Hopefully he'll be a player who can step right in and make an impact.
Welcome aboard Michael Carrera.
